Othello

"Damn her, lewd minx! O, damn her!
Come, go with me apart; I will withdraw.
To furnish me with some swift means of death
For the fair devil. Now art thou my lieutenant.
Othello
I am your own for ever.
Iago " Act III, scene iii

Written: 1604

Synopsis: Othello, a brave Moorish soldier of Venice, marries the Italian daughter of a high-ranking Senator. Through the manipulations of his trusted betrayar, Iago, Othello is tricked into thinking his beloved wife unfaithful. Mayhem and murder ensue with pretty much everyone dead in the end. "Never make friends with the devil my friend, his pitchfork will get you in the end." Words spoken by Artemus Gordon of the Wild, Wild West, but never truer than here with Othello and Iago, the angelic-seeming devil ... metaphorically speaking.

Characters:
• Othello, the Moor of Venice and great general
• Desdemona, his wife, daughter of an Italian senator
• Iago, Othello's lieutenant
• Roderigo, Iago's witless tool
• Michael Cassio, a Florentine in the Venetian army

Musings: Iago is a great motiveless villain. Each actor gets to find his own reason for his crimes. And Othello becomes harder and harder to play sympathetically as a man who mistrusts and murders his innocent, yet spineless wife. Oh, and another thing, "Never make deals with the devil, friend, his pitchfork will get you in the end." Artemus Gordon from The Wild, Wild West - I think that sums it up, eh? It's almost Faustian, this play.
